My fellow Benildean Lasallians, dear parents, relatives and friends  of the graduates, and you, graduates, Mr. and Ms. 7 % — good morning!

Why “7%”? Because the latest statistics tell us that out of every 100 students who enroll in Grade 1, only 7%–yes, 7%–complete a college degree! And, modesty aside, how many from those 7% have been able to graduate from an institution that has the caliber of faculty and facilities found in De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde? I will return to the 7% later.

As you all know, seventeen days ago we began celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Lasallian presence in the Philippines. That presence began in 1911 with just nine Brothers in one school in Manila and 100 students. Today, after two world wars and a bloody massacre and after witnessing the end of one colonial period and the birth of a new republic, that one school has bloomed into seventeen schools throughout the country, and the 100 students have become nearly 100,000. And there you have an additional blessing, dear graduates, for not only are you among the fortunate 7% this year, but you also graduate on a very special and memorable occasion.

You probably thought you were done with exams, test, and quizzes. Well, surprise, surprise, I have one final quiz before you leave. It’s just one fill-in-the-blanks sentence, and all you have to answer is just one word.

Okay? This is the sentence: “Every human being wants to be ____”. What is your answer? Successful? Rich? Fulfilled? The word that I find most appropriate is “happy”. All of us, whether rich or poor, whether college graduates or grade school drop-outs, Americans, Africans or Asians—all of us want to be happy.

AKIC CSB hotel

I was searching CSB’s site to check if they offer short courses for Culinary and it seemed YES! My younger brother is on his last sem until this March and we’re planning on what would be next for him. Taking Culinary Arts is on top of the list and good thing CSB is offering it. The details I need to check tomorrow.

The Certificate in Culinary Arts (CiCA) program is offered in consortium with the Center for Asian Culinary Studies. A well-designed module for aspiring Chefs, Entrepreneurs and Restaurateurs who need accelerated training and education. The program combines culinary theories, latest trends in the industry, practical training and application in the DLS-CSB School of HRIM’s state-of-the-art facilities under the supervision of certified trainers, professionals and industry practitioners.

greentennial runI was in the middle of the run.. then there was functional check. For the Win!

January 23 was the Greentennial Run Day and of all days, I was assigned on-call for the weekend system outage. The scheduled Functional Check was 23:00 UK Time which is 7:00 AM here in Manila. It was already Friday when I finally realized that I had a run and a functional check happening at the same time.

Hindi ko na makahirit ng replacement kase late ko na nga narealize ang mga bagay bagay. 5:45 AM nagstart yung cue for the 5K Run. Around 5:50, meron nang nagtext! Hahaha. Kelangan na daw mag-online. Sabi ko 15 minutes. Makatakbo naman ako ng malayo layo. I told myself, bahala na. Itakbo na lang to.  After 15 minutes, I decided to leave and go straight to office. Ang problema, walang taxi! Sarado yung kalsada diba. Haha. So since wala na rin choice. Takbo pa rin ng takbo.

October 17,  today’s date,  is pretty significant for me. Exactly a year ago, it signified my official first day of being unemployed. LOL. Kidding aside, October 17 was my[our] Graduation Day! And it’s been a year! Ang bilis lang no. Parang kelan lang. At yung sumunod na batch samen, nag-aantay na lang din ng pagmartsa sa PICC. I’ve been thinking of coming actually. Sana may mag-invite — Casey maybe? hehe.

It makes me think of what had happened to me for a YEAR. Ang tanong, may nangyare nga ba? I wanted to do many things, pero hindi pwede, ang hirap. Ang problema kase, I wanted to do many things.. at a time. Bakit kase 1 at a time lang?

Opportunities. They come around. College Diploma? Display. It could land you a job. But your character and ability will keep you up on the race.

The Student Days to the Working World was a big SHIFT for me. Buti na nga lang nag-OJT ako kasi kung indi, another culture shock na naman siguro ito. Although my alma mater have equipped me with everything I need to enter the overrated corporate world, maybe I wasn’t ready in some aspects – emotional maybe?

Anu bang pinagsasasabi ko? Haha. Sa totoo lang, I am still thankful to everything that I have right now. Kahit na kinakain ako ng worldy worries at nanlulumo ang Christian life ko, I am working on it. Sorting things out.

I miss going to school! I miss studying! I miss school projects! I miss the variety of my life! I miss a lot of things!

I suddenly get to compare my life in college and my life now at work. There are things that I like better when I was still a student and of course there are things I like the way it is now.

If Sarah has her version of HighSchool vs. College, I’m gonna have my version of College vs Work.

If you would ask me if  DLS-CSB is my first choice of school and course, that is a NO. But if you would ask me do I regret going to Benilde and taking up CA. That is also a No.
